Danshui

On Sunday, Mel and I took the MRT to the end of the line- Danshui. We'd been here once before on our second weekend in Taiwan back in August, and since then I've passed through a few times while traveling to Baishawan Beach. We've always had a soft spot for Danshui's scenic bridge and the lively waterfront market so we decided to spend an unseasonably warm Sunday afternoon (28 degrees on January 10th!) bumming around Danshui. Ahhh, coffees in the sun and wearing shorts in January- I will always fondly remember the year I skipped winter!

There are two main streets near the waterfront lined with vendors, entertainers and carnival games for as far as the eye can see. We started out walking up the street closest to the water which offers entertainment and shopping to the right and water, fishermen and scenery to the left. Above: water and scenery.

We bought ourselves a few snacks-notably an ice cream wrap (our favorite street snack!)- this time with just 2 scoops of ice cream instead of 3, but with strawberry ice cream instead of taro. We also did a bit of shopping- I bought a tripod at CheckFun and Mel found a place that randomly sold blistex by tub. I didn't buy the HOT hat that you can see in the above photo, but I did buy a miniature version as an ornament because I'm not really sure how well a giant straw hat would travel in a packed suitcase back to Canada.

We took a ferry boat over to the bridge. Love it, but upon closer inspection, it could use a paint job. Like most of the other buildings here :P

We each bought a beer and ate some mochi on the wharf as we watched the sun disappear behind the clouds and decided it was time to go home to prepare for one final week of classes. And what a sucky, sick week it would turn out to be...
